Please remember that there will be NO SCHOOl on Monday, May 31st since it is Memorial Day.  Enjoy the long weekend!

We are going on a field trip on May 25th.  The children are very excited about the performance "Click, Clack, Moo".  Please be sure that your child is dressed approppriatley.  In addition, please send your child to school with a bag lunch.  If you would like me to order a bag lunch for your child, please let me know.  The cost of the trip is $9.00.  We are accepting cash or money order only.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Welcome to Mrs. Ramirez's first grade! We have been working hard each day to model Mullen Shamrock CHARM. 



Reading: We have been working really hard during our reading time to figure out words that we do not know.  The children are blending letters together to make words.
Here are a few strategies to use with your child when he or she comes to an unknown word.
1. Check the picture.
2. Look for a chunk.
3. Get your mouth ready for the beginning sound.
4. Does it make sense?
All of these strategies we have been learning in reading groups.  The children will get better with practice.

Writing: We are becoming such wonderful authors and illustrators! The children have been working really hard on our "All About Books".  We have been learning how to organize our thoughts and write them clearly.  The children have been doing such an amazing job.  Please look for an "All About Me"  that you child has published to come home soon.
Math: We have been using different math games to learn how to make combinations.  Please ask your child the meaning of the words Total, Sum, and Combination.  Please look for the math games to play with your child.  The children have been working on addition and subtraction story problems as well. 
Science:  We are learning about Plants. Please encourage your child to tell you the different parts of the plant: Stem, leaves, flower, and roots.  In addition, please ask the children what a plant needs to survive.  Sun, Water, and Air.   
Homework: The children will bring homework every night except on Fridays.  Word Study notebooks will be sent home every night.  The activities are to be completed and returned each day.  The children will also have a book to read.  Please be sure to practice the first grade sight words so that your child's reading and writing will improve.  Thank you for all your support.
